Tomorrow, December 21st, is the winter solstice, symbolizing the beginning of a new season. It is the darkest day of the year, but it is also the time when the sun starts to return. It is a time to honor the symbolism of light and dark, life and death, and the cyclical nature of our world. From this point forward, each day will get a little bit longer until the summer solstice in June.
Here are a few ways we can celebrate the winter solstice, reminding ourselves of our connection to nature:
Watch the sunrise: wake up early on the winter solstice to watch the sun come up. Notice the color of the lighting and how it changes as the sun rises. Feel the sun’s warmth on your face and send it gratitude for the light that it brings.
Host a winter potluck: each guest can bring a dish with their favorite seasonal ingredients. Think warming spices, stews, slow-cooked meat, roasted vegetables, and mulled wine.
Create a winter solstice bath or foot soak: add citrus essential oils to symbolize the energy of the sun.
Add winter decor to your home: decorate your home with pine cones, garlands, white candles, and anything that represents winter.
Bundle up and go for a winter walk: winter walks are special because they are usually quiet, the air is crisp, and the pastel lighting is beautiful. Continuing to get fresh air this time of year is so important, just make sure to wear layers and protect the back of your neck with a scarf!
Reflect, release, let go, and set intentions for the new season: journal all of the things that you’d like to let go of followed by all of the things that you’d like to call in for the season ahead.
Whether we’re celebrating with a ritual, a feast, or a winter walk, I hope we can take a moment to notice the shift in the seasons and feel connected to something bigger than ourselves.
