Overwhelmed? Just take the next step forward.
This past week has been for listening to melanated voices, educating myself on my white privilege and taking action to support black communities. It is apparent that it is going to take a lot of work and dedication to dismantle the systems we have in place. I haven’t let this get in my way of taking some kind of action every day. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to start, just start. Baby steps. Any action is better than no action.
Here are some of the ways I have taken action this week to move towards racial justice and equality:
1. Donated to Minnesota Freedom Fund, Black Lives Matter and Nicole Cardoza
2. Reading Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad and discussing in a book club
3. Listening to “1619” a podcast from The New York Times
4. Following black-owned businesses, influencers and artists to diversify my social media feeds
5. Reading a daily anti-racist newsletter from Nicole Cardoza to hold me accountable for the next 365 days
6. Protested with my community in Boulder, CO
7. Had meaningful conversations with friends and family about what we are all doing to help make a change
We all show up differently and every step counts. Also, remember that we are in this for the long haul, so, take breaks, continue self-care practices and make sure your actions are sustainable.
I’d love to hear what you all have been doing this week to help dismantle racial injustice. Comment below!
