What is Jing? The Definition of This TCM Term.
What is Jing?
Jing or “essence” is stored in the kidneys and is associated with vitality and longevity. Jing is formed at conception and is inherited from our parents. It controls the growth and development of our bones, teeth, hair, marrow, hormonal changes, fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, lactation, and sexual function.
Jing is finite in quantity and is gradually used up and depleted over the course of a normal life cycle. Factors that deplete Jing include: poor diet, overwork, insufficient sleep, excessive sex, childbirth, and recreational drug use.
When Jing is deficient in the body, there can be developmental problems, poor memory, poor mental concentration, reproductive disorders, hair loss, early aging, loose teeth, and age-related dementia.
Jing can be conserved but not replenished. Ways to conserve Jing include: tai chi, qigong, meditation, a nourishing/healthy diet, and being intentional with how we use our energy.
When we go with the flow of life instead of fighting it, our Jing is more likely to be conserved.
